Augustin Jean
Enameled Japanese Fan Motifs Vase
|

Augustin Jean Enameled Vase, Paris
Beautiful and rarely seen
Augustin Jean enameled vase. Decorated with enameled and gold
gilded Japanese stylized fan motifs on the front and back.
Beautiful root beer colored glass, with applied clear blue glass snail
feet which are lightly iridescent. The top has an applied rim in
a slightly different teal blue colored glass then the feet. The
vase is optically ribbed, and has a very nice bulbous shape, with a
nice polished pontil on the base. This design is very interesting
as it's essentially a Victorian designed shape, with the precursor of
Art Nouveau enameled designs fashioned after the Japanese woodblock
prints.
Unsigned, but unmistakably Augustin Jean 's work. See a similar
piece in the Feb. 2003 Fisher's "Glas des Jugendstil & Art Deco"
auction catalog on page 91 in the identical root beer colored glass,
with identically iridized blue applied glass, and even the enameling
and motifs are similar.
